Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems Welcome New Pediatrician

Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems (SVCHS) welcomes William Wear, MD, FAAP to Tazewell Community Health Center to serve as the Pediatrician.

Dr. Wear comes to SVCHS with a vast background of experiences to share with his patients. He attended medical school at the University of South Alabama College Of Medicine in Mobile, AL, where he graduated in 1991. Previously, he had practiced general pediatric medicine for 19 years in Martinsburg, WV.  Wear has served as an Assistant Clinic Professor of Pediatrics at the Eastern Division campus of the West Virginia University School of Medicine where he taught and mentored young medical students about the practice of general pediatrics, both in a busy clinic and hospital setting. He also served as the President of Medical Staff at WVU Medicine-Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV for three years and the Chairman of Pediatrics Department two separate times.

“I wanted to help children who were sick, most of whom through no fault of their own.  I felt energized by helping the anxiety we all feel as parents about our children, especially when they are ill, or having mental health issues that are often not well-understood, and perhaps frightening, to the patients and parents.  Pediatrics is a generally happy profession.  Kids are tough, they are resilient, they bounce back and typically they get better…most of the time.  Kids laugh and say some incredible things; not a day goes by in this profession where I don’t get to smile and laugh and hug kids and set them on my lap and behave like a kid myself.  Sure, there is crying and shots and days that are really difficult.  But our essential mission in pediatric medicine is to help keep kids healthy and develop healthy habits, to help prevent major disease before it starts.  That has for 28 years been a privilege for me to be a part of,” Wear said.

He has two children and has a passion for golf and reading biographies of historical figures or historical fiction.

“I am grateful and thankful to have the ability to do what I do.  I feel I been blessed, and received far, more from families and patients than I’ve given them,” Wear said.
